Will working carers gain right to leave?

We have positive news to share with you as the Carers Leave Bill begins its journey through parliament on Friday 9 September. If MP’s pass the bill and it becomes law then unpaid carers will be entitled to a week’s leave from work every year.

At the moment, leave is only available at the employer’s discretion or if there is an emergency. It is estimated that 600 unpaid carers leave their job every day because they cannot balance work and looking after someone. With the new rights established in law, carers could support their cared for at hospital appointments or after operations and not face losing their employment.
