Promoting a positive outlook in life is something I take pride in

Supporting young carers has never been more important so they have all the opportunities to thrive.

This has come into sharp focus for us at North Tyneside Carers’ Centre after new data revealed a sharp rise in the number of school children with caring responsibilities in North Tyneside.

A total of 774 pupils were recorded as young carers in school census data in 2025-26 compared to 537 the year before.

That means 2.5% of pupils in North Tyneside are also young carers, compared with 1.1% across England.

While it’s positive that they are being identified, we know that many young carers may still be unknown and not getting the support they need.

If you know a young person who looks after someone, our young carers team can help. They provide advice, support and practical help that will make a huge difference to the young carer and their family.

This week, we are introducing Claire who runs the breaks and activities sessions for our young carers. She organises everything from day trips out to fun sessions indoors. Having been a young carer herself, she knows exactly the importance of the support we provide.

Claire said:

It is the best job. I organise sessions for the children to have that downtime, away from their caring role so they can meet other carers. It is lovely to be a part of that.

So many of our young carers have created strong friendships with their peers at our weekly sessions, and others even more so when we get to do some real adventurous activities.

Every session planned is something they have asked for, and I thrive in making our service as varied as possible.

Our young carers team is very close knit, and we support each other really well, in all aspects of our roles.

Growing up, I was also a young carer for my eldest brother who was non-verbal, used a wheelchair and had cerebral palsy. So to do a bit of a big circle, and work in a field where I can support those with similar upbringings and promote a positive outlook on life, is something I take pride in.

Before North Tyneside Carers’ Centre I always had aspirations to be a PE Teacher, so after completing my degree in Sports Coaching I then went on to do a couple of coaching jobs before going back to university to do a PGCE in Primary Education. I taught PE in schools for a while, until I found out that there was freedom away from a school timetable, so I looked for something different – and here I am!

What I love most about this role is the variety and flexibility whilst working as part of a team.

Young carers look after someone at home who could not manage without their help. If you know a young person in North Tyneside who may be caring for someone, support is available.
