It is amazing when you see their confidence and self esteem improve

We are lucky at North Tyneside Carers’ Centre to have a group of passionate and hard-working people on our team who are dedicated to improving the lives of carers.
They really make a difference, and every day they offer practical support, a listening ear and creative ways to make sure young carers of all ages thrive.
Behind every service provided, activity or event organised and conversation is a team committed to making sure they feel seen, valued and supported.
We have been introducing the people behind the work and this month we’re shining a spotlight on our fantastic Young Carers team. Last week we posted inspiring words from Family Support Worker Helen, if you missed that you can read it here.
We hope these blogs will give you a glimpse into what happens behind the scenes, the impact our staff have every day, and the people who help make North Tyneside Carers’ Centre such a welcoming place.
This week we hear from Michelle Main, who is also a Family Support Worker at North Tyneside Carers’ Centre:
I love my job as I get to meet and help lots of different people and every day is different. I first started at North Tyneside Carers’ Centre four years ago as the Breaks and Activities Worker, a role I loved but I wanted to be able to help more and do more. I was lucky enough to get the role as Family Support Worker three years ago. I also still help organise the breaks and activities when needed so young carers will see me everywhere.
As a Family Support Worker, I work directly with young carers to understand what is going on for them and how they are feeling as we know things can be quite tough. I also speak with the family and school to ensure that we are supporting in all areas as there is no point in solving one problem but ignoring some of the others.
I give young carers the opportunity to have their voice heard and it is amazing when you see their confidence and self esteem improve.
I always try to get the best for all my families I work with and will keep going until I get answers for them.
I am passionate about the work we do because we give people a space to be listened to and heard and changes made for the better. We work with a lot of schools and other services to try and get the right support in place for the young carer and the person they care for. We have a great team who all support each other and the families we work with
I love being able to see the difference in people from when we first meet them to when we end the one to one support when they are ready. They often join our activity sessions and it is amazing to see the confidence they have, the smiles they have and the chance they have to do things they may have always struggled to do with their family.
If you know a young person who needs support, get in touch.
