10 hacks for carers

Over the summer we have been sharing tips for carers to help make this time of year a bit easier.

Read this helpful blog here.

From managing daily routines to juggling appointments, medications, and household responsibilities, finding ways to reduce stress can make a real difference.

In this blog, we’re sharing practical hacks designed to make everyday life a little easier.

1. Keep everything in one place

Create a “carer’s folder” (physical or digital) with helpful documents like medication lists, appointment letters, emergency contacts, care plans and any important benefits and financial information

Keeping everything together will save time when it comes to appointments or when unexpected issues crop up.

2. Set medication reminders

Use smartphone alarms or medication reminder apps to prompt medication times, reorder prescriptions and keep track of appointments

3. Batch cook on better days

Sometimes you really do not feel in the mood to cook. For those days, prepare extra portions of meals when you do make them and freeze them. This means there are healthy meals ready on days when caring becomes more demanding.

4. Pack an essentials bag

Keep a bag ready with essentials for unexpected hospital visits. This could have things like a phone charger, snacks, water bottle, spare clothing and a medication list.

5. Check what financial support you’re entitled to

Many carers miss out on benefits and other things they are entitled to, including energy support schemes and Carer’s Allowance. Get in touch with us if you would like support.

6. Join a carers group

At North Tyneside Carers’ Centre we have a range of different carers groups where you can meet other people in similar situations.

7. Keep important numbers as favourites

Save your GP, pharmacy, emergency contacts and family members as favourites on your phone for quick access.

8. Write things down immediately

Keep a notebook or use your phone’s notes app to record questions for doctors, any new symptoms or changes the person you care for might experience and any updates from appointments. It may also be helpful to make a note of any medication changes.

9. Schedule mini breaks in the day

You don’t always need an hour to recharge. A five-minute cup of tea, a short walk outside, stretching, or listening to a favourite song can help reduce stress and improve resilience throughout the day.

10. Create a comfort playlist

Music can reduce anxiety, improve mood, and even help with routines like washing, dressing, or winding down. Have different playlists for calming, energising, or reminiscing.

Remember – you do not have to do this alone.

At North Tyneside Carers’ Centre we have a team to support you with any challenges you face.
