Why joining a carers group could make all the difference

As 2025 comes to an end, this time of year is a good time to reflect and take time to think about what we want from the year ahead. For carers, that could also mean thinking about the needs of the person you care for, as well as your own wellbeing.

It could be time to think about what extra support you might need. Caring can be rewarding, but can also be tiring and isolating.

At North Tyneside Carers’ Centre, we have a range of carers groups that are designed to bring people together, reduce isolation, and offer a safe, welcoming space where carers can feel understood.

Why join a carers group?

Carers groups give you the chance to meet other people who understand what caring is really like, share experiences, tips and coping strategies, feel listened to, and have fun.

Many of our carers say that talking to someone who gets it can make a huge difference.

We offer a range of groups so you can find one that suits your situation and availability.

All Carers Support Group – This is a monthly group open to all adult carers who meet, share news and sometimes take part in activities or hear from a guest speaker.

Mental Health Carers Support Group – Anyone who supports a family member or friend with a mental health condition can meet others in the same situation at this monthly group.

Dementia Carers Support Group – If you care for someone with dementia, you can find a welcoming space in this group with other carers who face the same challenges.

We also have a Young Adult Carers Support Group for people aged between 18 and 25 where you can take time out for yourself, share experiences, and build new friendships.

This year we also introduced our new Evening Carers Group – a great opportunity to meet other carers, especially if you can’t attend groups during the day because of your job or caring responsibilities.

What if I’m nervous about coming along?

It’s completely normal to feel unsure about attending a group for the first time. Many carers worry about speaking in front of others or not knowing what to expect. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with. You can simply listen and have a cup of tea.

Our staff and volunteers are there to make sure everyone feels welcome, respected, and supported.

Joining a carers group could be the first step towards feeling less alone and more supported in your caring role. Whether you’re looking for understanding, friendship, advice, or just a break, there’s a group for you at North Tyneside Carers’ Centre.

We also have some exciting events coming in January.
