The mental health benefits of getting outdoors

When you are a carer, looking after your own wellbeing is just as important as the care you provide for someone else. One of the simplest and most effective ways to support your mental health is by spending time outdoors.
Throughout this month while we still have some light in the mornings and evenings, we will be sharing the benefits of getting out and about and some helpful tips for how to make time for this as a carer.
The reason why this matters is research has shown that time in nature can massively reduce stress and anxiety, it can improve sleep and boost your energy levels. Not only that, but just getting out in the fresh air could help you feel more connected to your local area.
For carers, who don’t have a lot of time to themselves, even a short time outside can be just the mental reset you need.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to buy a lot of gear and spend hours hiking – small moments are all you need.
Why not try a 10-15 minute walk around the block or even to a nearby park. If you can’t leave the house, could you enjoy a tea or coffee in your garden or on your doorstep? Try and make a plan today to sit outside for 10 minutes of fresh air to break up your day.
We know not every carer can easily leave home. If that’s the case, there are still ways to bring the outdoors to you. Open a window and let the fresh air in and pause for a moment to listen to what is happening around you. You could also think about getting some indoor plants to bring nature inside. If you have the space, a few pots of herbs or flowers on a windowsill can make a difference to your day.
If the person you care for is able to, you could spend some time together outdoors. Enjoy a gentle walk or sit together on a park bench. In our next blog we will uncover some outdoor spaces you could visit in North Tyneside.
Spending time in nature doesn’t need to be complicated. Whether it’s a walk, a few minutes in the garden, or even just opening the window to let the fresh air in, these small acts can have a powerful effect on your wellbeing.
This week, make some time to step outside if you can. If you would like some support with your caring role, get in touch with us at enquiries@ntcarers.co.uk or visit our website here.
