Powered by people: our 2025 highlights and what’s next

Wow what a year 2025 was. As 2026 kicks off, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights of the past year.
For us, this year has been shaped by people. From carers, young carers, families, staff, volunteers and supporters – all coming together to make a difference.
We are so proud of our peer groups, ranging from dementia carers to mental health carers. The all carers group has continued to be a success and we even rolled out an evening carers meet up.
We’ve also continued to strengthen support for young carers, working closely with schools and other organisations to help identify young people earlier and ensure they feel supported both at home and in education. Behind the scenes, our team has been busy listening, learning, and adapting, making sure our services reflect what carers really need.
Some of the highlights of 2025 include:
- Celebrating Young Carers Action Day in March, thanks to Carers Trust, by taking a group of young people to the home of Newcastle United – St James’ Park, where they got to experience what it’s like to walk out on the pitch. We also went to the Discovery Museum in Newcastle.
- Organising an Easter Eggstravaganza for carers where they spent the day getting creative with Easter wreaths, decorating biscuits and ending the day with laughter thanks to Claire’s one-of-a-kind bingo session.
- Holding several Carer Money Matters events to support people with financial information and energy advice. We heard from one of our carers, Vanessa, who explained how the help she received made a big difference to her life.
- Marking Carers Week in June we held a whole host of events. From a drop-in event, DIY banner making and a coast and toast walk – there was something for all carers. We also held a Carers Conference with amazing guest speakers.
- We heard from one of our trustees, Bill Wilson, who is also a dementia campaigner and wrote about how he avoided his wife’s dementia diagnosis.
- Championing carers’ rights for Carers Rights Day.
- Helping carers back into employment through our Working for Carers project.
- Putting on a range of activities for our young carers.
But the moments that stay with us are often the quieter ones. For example, a carer feeling confident enough to ask for help for the first time, a young carer laughing with others or someone leaving a session feeling a little lighter, a little more supported.
None of this would be possible without the generosity of our supporters, partners and local organisations who have helped us deliver activities, provide advice, and reach more carers across North Tyneside.
As we start 2026, our mission remains: to improve the quality of life of carers in North Tyneside.
In the year ahead, we’re aiming to:
-
- Expand opportunities for carers to connect with one another
- Continue championing carers’ rights and raising awareness of entitlements
- Develop more accessible support for carers balancing work, health, and caring responsibilities
- Build stronger partnerships with local organisations, schools and employers
- Keep listening to carers, and shaping services around what they tell us matters most
