Life as a young carer

Life as a young carer

Young carers are balancing school, friendships, and the everyday responsibilities of supporting a loved one.

It’s a role filled with love and pride, but it can also bring exhaustion, worry, and feeling unseen.

At North Tyneside Carers’ Centre, we know how important it is that young carers’ voices are heard and understood.

This blog includes the words of one of our young carers who shares what life is really like behind the scenes.

I’m 19 years old, I enjoy reading, baking and arts and crafts in my free time. I’m proud of myself for working hard and passing my A levels.

Caring role

One thing I’ve learned from being a young carer is to be more patient.

The best part of being a young carer is being able to support the person I care for and my family.

The hardest part is the lack of time for myself.

Three words to describe being a young carer are: tiring, helpful and time-consuming.

North Tyneside Carers’ Centre

When I come to the young carer groups and activities, I enjoy that I’m able to get out of the house and do things I normally don’t have time to do. I also enjoy how supported I feel.

The centre has supported me in applying for university, applying for jobs and improving my CV, and has provided me with first aid training. It was really helpful to have the one-on-one support I did as it made me feel less stressed and supported.

One of the memories that stands out is when I went to Powerburn with the centre for the day. I had lots of fun and had the chance to experience things I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.

Friends

Meeting other young carers has been insightful as I’ve met people in a similar situation and that has helped me feel less isolated.

Something that surprised me about being part of a group is how we support each other by listening to each other and including everyone.

Something I wish people knew about young carers is that we aren’t different from everyone else.

These words remind us that young carers have a lot to offer us and play a vital role in society. By listening to their experiences, we can all play a part in making sure they get the understanding, support, and opportunities they deserve.
