How to survive and thrive on Blue Monday

Blue Monday falls on 19 January and is often described as the bleakest day of the year. The long nights, cold weather, post-Christmas lull and financial pressures can all combine to make winter feel heavy.
While there’s no magic fix for low mood, there are small, realistic steps you can take to help brighten difficult days and have something to look forward to.
Reminder: Caring can be emotionally and physically demanding at the best of times, and winter simply adds another layer. Be kind to yourself because feeling low doesn’t mean you’re failing.
Tip 1 – Let the light in
The days are shorter but make sure to open the curtains to get some light into your home and if you can, step outside for five minutes of fresh air. If getting out isn’t an option, sitting near a window with a brew can be soothing and helps your body to register daylight.
Tip 2 – Break the day into manageable moments
Don’t focus on the whole day if you are feeling low. Instead, break it into sections and pick one thing to enjoy like a podcast, listening to a song or enjoying a favourite meal, to add in. Then plan a comforting routine, which can include a mid-morning coffee break.
Tip 3 – Talk to others
It can be very easy at this time of year to close down the shutters, especially when the weather is bad. But remember you can still call or message someone. At North Tyneside Carers’ Centre we also have a lot of online training sessions that provide useful information. Take a look at our website for more details.
If low mood is affecting your daily life, it’s important to seek support. Speaking to your GP to see what support is available to you.
If you’re a carer in North Tyneside, support is available. Whether it’s a friendly chat, practical advice or a chance to connect with others, you don’t have to face winter alone.
