Ermelinda is a young adult carer, looking after her mam who has mental-ill health and limited mobility. She helps her mam with a lot of things around the house, as well as emotional support, personal care and interpreting.
Ermelinda was stressed and was finding it very challenging to balance everything in her life. She has the responsibility of looking after her mam whilst applying for a scholarship to pursue her dream – a degree in healthcare.
She was also struggling in other areas of her life – as an asylum seeker, it was difficult to navigate the system to get new glasses and dental treatment – something she was increasingly in need of.
This was all on top of trying to live her own life as a young adult in her 20s.
Ermelinda was referred into the Working for Carers project and started receiving support from her advisor.
Over the course of several one-to-one sessions, Ermelinda and her advisor worked together to apply for scholarships and training programmes. She also received practical support in filling out forms to book appointments at the opticians and dentist.
Her advisor spoke to Ermelinda about the difficulties she was experiencing in balancing her caring role alongside everything else – including how she could continue to receive information, advice, and support through her local carers centre.
Thanks to the support of the Working for Carers project, Ermelinda was successful in her scholarship application, and is now enjoying studying towards her degree. She was also offered a space on an English and Maths course.
Ermelinda said: “The Working for Carers project helped me apply for my scholarship and everything else that I have been struggling with. As an asylum seeker, it can be challenging, but my advisor’s encouragement and support has boosted my confidence during stressful times. Thank you – your help has really eased my journey, and I truly appreciate your guidance and encouragement along the way.”
