Create your summer support plan

School holidays, changes to routines, warmer weather and reduced availability of some services can make summer quite tricky for carers. That’s why now is the perfect time to think ahead and create your own summer support plan.

Planning ahead means you give yourself the best chance of enjoying this time of year and making sure you and the person you care for have the support you need.

Start by asking yourself: what might change this summer?

  • Will your usual routine change?
  • Are there appointments, holidays or family visits planned?
  • Will you have additional caring responsibilities during the school holidays?
  • Are any of your regular support services reducing their hours?

Thinking about the potential challenges straight away means you can consider any alternative arrangements.

Your support network

You are not alone. Make a list of people who could help if you needed them. This might be family members, friends, neighbours or even people you have met through our carers groups and events.

If you’ve never asked for help before, remember – many people want to support carers but aren’t always sure how.

Know what support is available

Whether it’s respite care, carers’ groups, wellbeing activities or practical advice, reaching out before you need support can make accessing help much easier if your circumstances change.

If you’re unsure where to start, we can help you at North Tyneside Carers’ Centre.

Young carers

Summer holidays can be fun but challenging for young carers. School provides a break from caring responsibilities for some and the holidays can mean spending more time providing care at home or missing out on activities with friends.

If there’s a young carer in your family, encourage them to take part in activities they enjoy and get in touch with us as we arrange breaks and fun activities they can take part in.

Plan for yourself

Make sure you are thinking about your own rest and down time. Have a think about:

  • When will you have time to rest?
  • What activities help you recharge?
  • Is there someone you can talk to if you’re feeling overwhelmed?
  • Have you booked any time that’s just for you?

Your summer support plan doesn’t need to be complicated.

It could simply be:

  • A list of important contacts.
  • Dates when routines will change.
  • A plan for taking regular breaks.
  • Knowing who to call if you need extra help.

By taking a little time now to think ahead, you can help make the coming months feel more manageable, leaving more room to enjoy the moments that matter.

If you need advice or support, don’t wait until you’re struggling. Get in touch with us and we can help you.
