Accessible outdoor activities in North Tyneside (that won’t cost you a penny)

In last week’s blog we set out all the reasons why getting outside is great for your wellbeing. Getting a change of scenery can do wonders for your mindset as a carer. Finding accessible and affordable activities close to home is especially important. Luckily, North Tyneside is full of beautiful outdoor spaces that are free to enjoy for all.
Our team has pulled together a list of our favourite places to visit.
1. Take a seafront stroll in Whitley Bay
The long promenade along Whitley Bay is perfect for a gentle walk, with wide, flat paths that are pushchair and wheelchair-friendly. You can enjoy sea views, grab an ice cream, and even stop at the iconic St Mary’s Lighthouse (with plenty of benches along the way to rest).
2. Relax in Northumberland Park
This peaceful green space between Tynemouth and North Shields is a hidden gem. With level paths, a pond, and plenty of shaded seating, it’s an ideal spot to enjoy nature without having to travel far. There’s also a play area if you’re bringing little ones along. The park is just a few minutes walk from Tynemouth Metro station with direct access when exiting from platform 1 (Birtley Avenue side) and heading through the metal gate at the bottom of the cobbled area.
3. Explore Richardson Dees Park in Wallsend
This historic park has flat, paved walkways, a beautiful bandstand, and open green areas perfect for a picnic. It’s also right next to the Wallsend Burn, which makes for a gentle riverside stroll.
4. Enjoy the scenery at Rising Sun Country Park
This much-loved local park has accessible trails, wildlife hides, and open spaces where you can spot birds, squirrels, and maybe even a deer. There’s also a visitor centre and café if you’d like to make more of a day of it.
5. Breathe in the sea air at Cullercoats Bay
Cullercoats offers a small, sheltered beach and a flat promenade, making it a lovely option for those who want to get close to the sea without too much walking. Perfect for a gentle wander or simply sitting and watching the waves.
6. Discover local history at Segedunum Roman Fort
The outdoor grounds at Segedunum are free to walk around, giving you a glimpse of Roman history right on your doorstep. It’s an easy, flat space to explore if you’re looking for something a little different.
7. Take the coast path at your own pace
The North Tyneside stretch of the coast path is stunning, running from Tynemouth to St Mary’s Lighthouse. You don’t have to walk the whole thing – choose a short section that suits your energy levels. Benches and bus stops along the route mean you can take breaks or hop on public transport when needed.
Getting outdoors doesn’t have to mean long walks or expensive days out. In North Tyneside, we’re lucky to have so many beautiful, accessible spaces to enjoy – whether you have 10 minutes or a whole afternoon.
So this weekend, why not pick one of these spots, take a breath of fresh air, and give yourself the break you deserve.
