Recognising young carers

Young Carers Action Day is more than a date in the calendar, it is a reminder that thousands of young people quietly carry responsibilities far beyond their years. Behind school uniforms and homework deadlines are children and young adults providing emotional, physical, and practical care to family members who depend on them every day.
We know that balancing education with caring is not easy. Young carers are more likely to experience interrupted learning, social isolation and stress and anxiety.
However, we also know that they are some of the strongest people we know. They develop amazing resilience, empathy, time management skills and maturity. These are qualities that deserve to be recognised.
While Young Carers Action Day focuses on children and young people, the responsibility to support them extends across society, including workplaces. Many employees today were once young carers. Some may still support younger siblings or family members who are carers themselves.
We want to shine a light on the role that organisations can play. This could include:
- Promoting awareness and open conversations
- Supporting employees with caring responsibilities
- Partnering with charities and community initiatives
- Encouraging volunteering and mentoring for young carers
- Advocating for flexible education and support systems
When businesses recognise hidden challenges in communities, they help build a more compassionate and sustainable future workforce.
Real change happens when awareness leads to action. This Young Carers Action Day, we want you to consider taking some action.
This could be learning more about young carers in your community, supporting organisations that provide help to young carers, having conversations in your workplace or via a network and even offering your time, advocacy, or funding where possible.
Young carers show us what responsibility, compassion, and strength look like. So let’s take some time to stand up for them.
