4 things every carer can do this month to protect their rights

Being a carer can often mean putting others first, whether it’s sorting out medication, arranging appointments or keeping someone safe and well. However, knowing your rights and taking small small steps to protect them can make a big difference.
Last week was Carers Rights Day and so we are taking the time this week to let you know all the things you can do to feel more supported, informed and valued.
- Register as a carer with your GP – once your GP practice officially records you as a carer, you could be entitled to flu jabs, annual health checks, and a better understanding about the pressures you face.
- Request a Carer’s Assessment – Every adult carer in the UK has the legal right to a Carer’s Assessment. You don’t need to be living with the person you care for, and you don’t need to be providing a certain number of hours. If your caring role is impacting your life, your work, health, social connections, or mental wellbeing – you can request one. It can lead to support such as respite, information, practical help, and financial guidance. If you need support arranging one or want help preparing, we are here to help.
- Talk to your boss about flexible working – If you’re juggling work and caring, you have workplace rights that can help you stay in employment without burning out. These include the right to request flexible working from day one and up to five days of unpaid carer’s leave. You also have the right to protection from discrimination linked to your caring role. It can feel uncomfortable raising these conversations but you don’t have to do it alone. We can help you understand your options and prepare what to say.
- Connect with others – Knowing your rights is important, but feeling supported is just as vital. Joining a carers group or online community can help you learn tips from people in similar situations, share concerns without judgment, stay informed about changes in rights or local support and feel less alone. At North Tyneside Carers’ Centre we run several support groups, meet-ups, and training sessions which are all designed to support you as a carer and build your confidence. Protecting your rights isn’t selfish, it’s essential. You deserve support, recognition, and space to look after yourself.
If you need help with any of the actions above our team is here for you.
