Autism Friendly Cinema at the Silverlink

There is going to be an Autism Friendly screening of the Muppets at the Silverlink Cinema in North Tyneside. The film starts at 11:30 on Sunday 19th of February

What makes the screenings autism friendly?

The screenings are recommended to anyone who would benefit from the subtle alterations made to the cinema experience, because of their sensory differences and because it allows them to attend newly released films with friends and family in an inclusive environment. Films are screened with the lights turned up, the volume turned down and with the trailers and adverts removed. People can feel free to move around the cinema or make a noise as they feel comfortable, however all guests (where necessary) should be suitably supervised by their designated carer throughout the performance.

Survey for Carers

Carers’ Week is happening in June this year and to accompany the week of awareness raising there is a survey as a way of tracking the health and happiness of the 6 million or so unpaid carers in the UK. It forms the basis of news for Carers Week and there have been good results in the past from issues first raised in the survey. Carers Allowance gets reprieve from Government

The Government has confirmed that eligibility for Carer’s Allowance, will not be tightened with the introduction of the new disability benefit, the Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Lord Freud, Minister of State for Work and Pensions, stated that both rates of the daily living component of the new Personal Independence Payment would be used as a criterion to determine the entitlement to Carer’s Allowance. The clarification from the Minister came after concerns that the Welfare Reform Bill left the future of Carer’s Allowance unclear.

The Welfare Reform Bill will replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with a new benefit the Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Entitlement to Carer’s Allowance is currently established through a disabled person getting the middle or higher rate care component of Disability Living Allowance and there was a real concern that reducing the number of care components from three to 2 in the new disability benefit would squeeze out many carers.

Although it is worth only £55.55 per week and is the lowest benefit of its kind, Carer’s Allowance is vital income for around 550,000 people who care, unpaid, for family or close friends and who cannot work full time.

December 2 – Carer Rights Day in North Tyneside

The Carers’ Centre is working with the Council, the Primary Care Trust and other organisations to develop a North Tyneside Carers’ Strategy that addresses the significant role of carers.

The Strategy plans to ensure that the needs of carers in North Tyneside are met and they are supported by making sure:

Carers’ voices are heard in decision-making that affects them.

Carers have choices and opportunities to participate in family life, social activities, employment and education.

Carers are fully informed with up to date, easily accessible and consistent information, advice and guidance.

We are holding the event on Carers Rights Day on Friday 2nd December at St Columba’s Church,Northumberland Square in North Shields from 10:30am – 2pm to give you the opportunity to have your say on the strategy priorities. Lunch will be provided during the event.

Could you offer care and support to an adult with a learning disability within your own home?

You can provide short breaks or long term support, its up to you!

Shared Lives Carers receive an average allowance of £391 per week.

Shared Lives

North Tyneside Shared Lives provides care and support for adults with learning disabilities. This is provided in approved Shared Lives Carers own homes and can be for short breaks, long term and emergency respite.

Shared Lives Carers have undergone assessment and approval and receive appropriate training and ongoing support. The Scheme is managed by North Tyneside Council and registered with the Care Quality Commission. The Scheme enables adults with learning disabilities to stay with a family, couple or single person in a family environment and be supported to become an active member of their local community. We are Moving….Slightly!

The Carers’ Centre is going to be moving offices but we will still be based in the YMCA building on the third floor. We are moving to the opposite side of the building so we will be on the left hand side as you come out of the lift and stairs. The new offices are larger and have better facilities so we will be able to accommodate new staff and create a dedicated Young Carer fun room as well as offer a nicer, private space for carers to come in to discuss issues.

We will move on Monday 7^th of November so please expect some disruption if you contact us on that day. We will keep the same address and phone numbers.

Carers of people with multiple sclerosis wanted

The Northumbria University Department of Psychology is currently involved in a research project examining the role of online personal experiences for choice and decision making in health care. Funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), this £2 million research project is a major collaboration betweenOxford University,Northumbria University, Department of Health, Oxfordshire PCT,WarwickUniversity,StirlingUniversity andSheffieldUniversity.

They are looking for carers of people with multiple sclerosis to take part in their research. To be eligible to participate in this study, you must be:

- A carer of someone with multiple sclerosis

- Aged 18 to 65 years old

- Have some experience of using the Internet
