The Children’s Society’s report, ‘Hidden from View’, gives an insight into the impact on the daily lives of young carers in England. It shows that:

The average annual income for families with a young carer is only around £16,000; £6,000 less than families who do not have a young carer.

Young carers are no more likely than their peers to come into contact with support agencies; despite government recognition that this needs to happen.

Young carers have significantly lower educational attainment at GCSE level; the equivalent to eight grades lower than their peers.

Young people who are from black or minority ethnic communities and young people for whom English is not a first language are twice as likely to be young carers.

As Spring very hesitantly sticks its head round the door, its time to head outside and enjoy some gentle strolls with the Carers’ Walking group. All the walks are chosen for their mix of interesting locations and history, access to cafes and easy to walk distances. They normally take about two hours and are a wonderful excuse to get out and about with other Carers.

The first walk of 2013 is taking place on Monday 4th March and will explore the sights and history of South Shields. Meet at North Shields Ferry landing at 10:15 for a 10:30 departure.

The following walk is Thursday 4 April 10:30 at Palmersville Metro Station. The intrepid walkers will be exploring Killingworth village.

March Autism Friendly film showing
Autism Friendly films are edited and presented to be compatible with the needs of children who have an autism diagnosis. The Odeon in the Silverlink in North Shields normally shows an autism friendly film once a month on Sunday mornings. This month its a return to the wonderful land of Oz. Here’s the blurb from the cinema:

Disney’s fantasy Oz: The Great and Powerful revisits one of the worlds best-loved stories, focusing on the Great Oz; in reality Oscar Digs, a humble travelling illusionist with dubious morals. When he’s transported to the magical kingdom, the unrest he encounters encourages him to use his talents for good, in this enchanting film for kids of all ages. Directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man 3), Oz: The Great and Powerful stars James Franco (127 Hours) and Michelle Williams (Shutter Island)

‘Oz The Great and Powerful ‘at ODEON Cinemas on Sunday 17th March and tickets will be released the Wednesday before.
